The LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a 20-character alpha-numeric globally unique legal entity identifier compliant with ISO17442 standards. Each LEI is linked to key information about the legal entity which holds the LEI, in order to identify legal entities participating in financial transactions worldwide.
LEIs are issued by Local Operating Units (LOUs) accredited by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF). KDPW is the only Polish LOU authorised to issue LEIs. KDPW issues LEIs to legal entities registered in as many as 35 countries. We operate in all EU countries as well as in Armenia, Northern Ireland, Iceland, the Kingdom of Great Britain, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Ukraine.
KDPW issues LEIs via a web application where users can obtain an LEI within minutes. The application is available at
https://lei.kdpw.pl.
In line with the general rules underlying the global legal entity identification system:
- the LEI is an internationally recognised standard,
- the LEI is built in accordance with ISO17442 standards and regulatory guidelines, and does not include an embedded identifier of the country of issue,
- LEIs can only be issued by agencies accredited by GLEIF,
- each legal entity can only have one LEI assigned to it,
- each LEI is linked with the reference data of the legal entity to which the LEI has been issued, as disclosed in the relevant public corporate registers, and the high quality of such data is ensured by the agency that manages the LEI,
- information about the issued LEIs and their linked reference data is made publicly available, free of charge, by Local Operating Units and GLEIF.
